Cultural context
Designed by engineer André Waterkeyn for the 1958 Universal Exposition, the Atomium represents an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times — a Cold War-era statement of faith in science and atomic energy. Originally meant to last six months, it was renovated in 2006 with shimmering stainless steel.
